FORMER HUSKY JOHNIE KIRTON SAN JOSE, Calif. — Johnie Kirton, a fullback with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League, has died in Northern California, the team announced Tuesday. He was 26. Kirton, a native of Everett, Wash. who played collegiately at the University of Washington, was a newcomer to the SaberCats. The team had acquired the 6-foot-3, 290-pound fullback from the rival Arizona Rattlers on May 9. Kirton, who has a young daughter, had also helped run an after-school football program for elementary students in Tempe, Ariz. According to the Mercury News, the San Jose SaberCats plan to wear stickers with his jersey number, 37, on their helmets during their upcoming game Saturday.
